Perils of Promoting with Nancy Henderson

There are so many promotional opportunities for writers nowadays.  How do you know which are the most effective?

I try to write two books a year.  In addition, I hold a full time job and have family responsibilities.  I’m on Myspace, Twitter, I maintain a blog on my website, and I belong to a group blog, The Writers Vineyard.  Plus I write the occasional article at various guest blogs and promo sites.  I don’t always have time to fit everything in.  In fact, oftentimes I feel like I’m running around doing ten different things at once.

Do the majority of these things work as effective promotion tools?  My friends twelve year old claims Myspace is “Soooo yesterday.”  Twitter, or Tweeting, she says, is “like totally rockin’.”  Ok, so maybe I should focus on my Tweets.

But I like to guest blog.  I love meeting new readers, visiting others’ sites, and hopefully gain a few new followers who might not have found me on my own site.

So what works?  I’m not altogether sure, but I press on.  I might not be the most organized person in the world, but I’m getting my name out there.  And hey, when I pen the next bestseller, people will sure know where to find me!

Thanks for reading,
Nancy

Excerpt - A Stranger in His Bed by Nancy Henderson

Angus watched Cat stare into the fireplace. Flames crackled, danced shadows and light across her features as she sat there.
Her cheeks were flushed from heat, and he had no doubt how soft they would be at the touch. Also because he’d just said something that would embarrass her. As days passed with her here, he was enjoying the newfound power he had over making her blush, that he could affect her, more and more. Although he did feel guilty at times for taunting her.
A strong north wind howled outside, sending a whisper of snow under the crack between the door and the threshold. Angus stuffed his hands in his pockets and watched her. She didn’t say anything.
He was an ass. She’d told him she was leaving. He’d offered to come with her, and when she refused, he’d gotten angry again.
Before Cat had come into his life, he could seldom remember a time when he lost his temper. Now, with her here, everything had turned upside down. His existence had no organization, no structure, no predictability. It simply was…not just an existence anymore.
How in hell could he just let her walk out of his life? But why in hell would she even want to stay?
She slowly removed her heeled boots and stockings as if she hadn’t a care that he was standing within inches of her. He watched her curl her bare feet under her skirts.
She had no idea the effect it had on him.
“Why don’t you have a sweetheart?” She set her boots beside her.
He grunted. Irritation doused him like water from the stream in December.
“Any woman would be happy to have you.”
“It wouldn’t be a real relationship.”
“I don’t understand.”
He shouldn’t have said anything. He’d only muttered it under his breath, more to himself than anyone.
He sighed. “Sex. I’m talking about sex.”
The expression on her face told him she was still in the dark. But how could she be? All she had to do was look at him to know the answer.
He shook his head. “No woman in her right mind would want to have sex with me. Not unless I paid her.”
“Why?”
“Why?”
“Are you incapable?”
“Wh—Of course I’m capable!”
“Then what is the problem?” She paused, bit her lip as if contemplating something. “I mean…positioning may present a challenge.”
His jaw dropped. There was no embarrassment he’d seen so often on her face when he’d hackled her. She just sat there staring at him as if she were genuinely waiting for an answer.
He ran his hand through his hair. Christ, she was waiting for an answer.

Swearing off paranormals......

When I finished Wicked Redemption, my latest paranormal release, I said I’d never write another book in this genre. Why? Because my voice, my entire writing style, is different with paranormals vs. my historical romances. The language is quick, modern, edgy. Writing in the contemporary world is certainly easier than world building in the past, but I love history. I love the research.

To tell you the truth, researching demons and the occult world scared me just a little. A friend suggested I watch the movie “The Exorcism of Emily Rose.” He said it would educate me on the nature of demons. So I watched it.

I guess I have a low scare tolerance. Most people don’t find the movie scary. I, on the other hand, slept with the light on for over a week! Holy crow, this wasn’t my hero demon, Cole Turner! This demon was…well bad. But bad in a bad way.

I know this sounds pathetic, but writing Wicked Redemption kept me up nights. Not for the hot steamy parts, which I admit contain quite a few, but for the scary stuff. For the demon that Cole is.

So I swore off paranormals. But I miss them. I miss my bad boys. And I’ve started writing another one. This time with the heroine as a paranormal figure, I won’t say what. It’s a surprise.

An interview with Nancy Henderson

Tami: Welcome Nancy we're glad to have you as the first interview of the Champagne blog.

Nancy: Hi, Tami. Thanks so much for interviewing me. It's a pleasure to be here.

Tami: OK, I have a confession to make to you, I have a HUGE crush on Cole from Wicked Redemption. Can you tell me a little bit more about why you decided to create this hunka hunka....I mean this wonderful character? Oh, and you can tell us about that chick he's in love with too, Maggie I think it is.

Nancy:
Well, I wanted to write a hero who was a serious over the top Alpha male. So naturally, he had to be bad to the bone. What's worse than a demon? LOL Maggie Webb is Cole's total opposite. She's organized, wary, and has a slight problem: She can see dead people. And the demon who's determined to finish her off.
For a complete listing and excerpt, please visit my website: http://www.nancyhenderson.com

Tami: He is definitely totally Alpha! It's a great that that opposites attract. I hear that you have a new book coming out in August. What can you tell me? Am I going to fall in love again?

Nancy: I sure hope so! Stranger In His Bed is a historical romance.

Here's a blurb:

A spy for the British, Cat Sterling is used to living dangerously. Despite having a bounty on her head, she never expects to be shot in the line of duty and left for dead.

Angus French had enough problems without finding a near-dead woman on his property. A Revolution was coming, and British sympathizers have just burned down his tavern. The last thing he needs is to be caught housing a woman who’s working for them.

The price on Cat’s head will more than pay for the damage done to his business. He never expects Cat to see him as security and kindness, two things she’s never had in life. And he never expects to learn that Cat has a few secrets of her own which threaten to rip them apart.

Tami: Wow, that sounds great, I can't wait to read it. **scribbles furiously on my calendar for August** When you are not surrounded with things such as books, bookstores, book signings, and book conventions what are you doing with yourself? (Whew, that all makes me tired just thinking about it!)

Nancy:
Well, I've been gardening. I have a serious vegetable garden started. I've already lost two tomato plants (not sure why) and I have a hungry woodchuck checking out the lettuce, so I'm not sure how successful I'll be, LOL, but it's a lot of fun! I also spend way too much time watching TV, especially cheesy reality shows!

Tami: I can sympathize with you on the garden. I have 15 tomato plants and I can almost guarantee that most of them will die. It will likely be from frost or that dag nabbed mole that lives to make me miserable. Now, back to the questions, most every author loves to read, so when you are not running errands during lunch break and climbing under cars (for more on that visit her blog) what do you like to read? What genre can you not live without?

Nancy:
I love reading everything from Stephen King to Marjorie M. Liu. My favorite genres are historical and paranormal romance. I also read a lot of sci fi, but I couldn't imagine ever writing it.

Tami: Now that I have tortured you with all those wonderful questions I want to thank you so much for visiting with us and giving us a little insight into who you are as a writer and as a person, it's been GREAT!

Nancy:
Thanks, Tami!

Tami: Any time Nancy! And don't forget guys
