What would failure cost him?

Excerpt

An explosion rocked the inner city, shattering brick and stone. Debris fell like rain. Dust and smoke coated the morning sun in darkness. The echo of the blast rang in the air and then faded to silence. One minute. Two. Then a second detonation followed. And another, until the sounds of bombs and falling rock drowned out everything else.

Rael shoveled down his breakfast standing up in the cafeteria when the first explosion hit. Food flew. Chairs overturned. The long tables skidded across the floor into the wall and Rael slid right along with them. The floor still swayed when he managed to pick himself up. His ears buzzed and a headache spread across his forehead. He tasted copper as he balanced on his clawed toes, dark wings tucked tight to his back to protect them from falling glass. With a quick glance, he took stock of his surroundings and the destruction around him.

“Seri!”

His eight-year-old sister had trailed him to the dining hall this morning, begging to go to training with him. Where was she? Panic seized him as he flipped tables and screamed her name again and again. His gut churned. Please, don’t let her be hurt. Not Seri.

It was love at first sight for coed Lexie Carter and Army Ranger Taylor Jackson. Can Lexie survive when Taylor is reported killed in action?

Excerpt

“Lexie, Lindsey. Come here! Hurry!”

Lexie exchanged a concerned look with her mother and ran to the front of the house with Lindsey following close behind. Miss Cathy stood frozen, grasping the doorframe. Looking through a sidelite of the front door, her breath caught and her heart raced. Six men in Army dress blues stood on the porch.

Lexie put an arm around Miss Cathy and assisted her to the couch in the formal living room, while Lindsey invited the men inside. Lexie knew why they were here, but was confused. Officers and NCOs didn’t come to notify families unless… It couldn’t be.

“What’s happened to my sons? No sugar-coating.” Miss Cathy’s voice trembled. One of the officers stepped forward with the senior NCO. “I’m Captain Springer.” He nodded at the man beside him. “This is Sergeant Michaels. Are you the mother of Captain Taylor Jackson and Private Tyler Jackson?”

Lexie gasped. Both of them couldn’t be gone. Blood surged through her veins like ice water.

Miss Cathy struggled to speak. “Yes, I am. This is Taylor’s fiancĂ©e, Lexie Carter.”

“Is Mr. Jackson available?”

“He’s out for the evening. Tell us what you have to say. Now.”

Lexie didn’t want to hear it. The words would make her fears real.

“We’re from the Army’s Casualty Notification Unit. Your son, Private Tyler Jackson, was reported missing in action in Khost province two days ago. The Afghan police discovered Captain Taylor Jackson’s body in the city of Khost yesterday. The Secretary of the Army extends his condolences for your loss.”

Lexie went numb inside. Taylor, the man who had introduced her to love and passion, couldn’t be dead. His team should have arrived at Fort Benning yesterday. They’d planned a weekend at the Gulf Shores condo after he’d debriefed. The weather was still cool and the beaches would be mostly deserted. Not that they would have left the condo often. Tears slid down her cheeks. The reality of life without Taylor overwhelmed her. Soon, sobs wracked her body. Her mother took her into her arms, patted her on the back, and muttered soothing nothings.

“What happened?” From her seat at the end of the couch, Miss Cathy was doing far better than she was. How could she bear it? One son dead, the other missing. Her babies, both gone.

Captain Springer nodded to Sergeant Michaels. “Private Jackson, at great personal risk to himself, saved the lives of members of his platoon while on patrol when it came under attack by a superior force of insurgents. When the extraction team arrived, he was missing. He remains missing after an extended search.”

“What was his condition when he was last seen?”

The pain in Miss Cathy’s voice reflected her own. Tyler was no friend of hers, but she hoped Miss Cathy didn’t lose both her sons. Why did Taylor have to die? Her Taylor, whom she’d fallen in love with at first sight, lay dead in a foreign country, but Tyler, the evil twin, might have survived. How could God let that happen?

Sergeant Michaels consulted a folder. “Members of his platoon reported he’d been injured. How seriously is unknown. There have been no claims of a captive. The search for him continues.”

Miss Cathy pursed her lips, then nodded. “Tell me about Taylor.”

Lexie gulped some air, trying to control her sobs. Miss Cathy was helpless where Tyler was concerned, but she could see that Taylor was taken care of.

Captain Springer and Sergeant Michaels exchanged a telling look.

“Afghan police discovered Captain Jackson’s body yesterday near the market in Khost. The circumstances are under investigation.”

“What does that mean?” Her voice sounded shrill. Taylor wasn’t a body. He was her fiancĂ©. The man she’d planned on spending the rest of her life with. A brave and decorated hero.

“As I said, ma’am, how or why Captain Jackson died is under investigation. We’ll keep you informed on the progress of the investigation. We should have details about his arrival at Dover Air Force Base by tomorrow.”

He turned to Miss Cathy. “We’ll give you a contact number for the Casualty Assistance Unit.”

He glanced her way, then nodded toward the door where two officers stood. “A chaplain and a physician accompanied us, if either of you need them. Mrs. Jackson, I recommend you phone your husband immediately. If you have family or others you wish to contact, we can assist you.”

Miss Cathy pulled her cell out of her pocket, speed-dialed Mr. Tom’s number, and prepared to have the most difficult conversation of her life. Miss Cathy was a strong woman, but how could she tell her husband both their sons were gone? They needed help and her own mother, who’d been a stranger for most of her life, was useless.

“Call Ely and Todd, Lindsey. I need them here.” Her guardians would handle the military. They would know what to do, but until they arrived she would discover what she could. She bounded off the couch, stormed across the room, and confronted the officer. “What happened to Taylor? What aren’t you telling us?”

Captain Springer shrugged and looked away. “We’ve given you the information we have, ma’am.”

Maybe she shouldn’t have left the couch so quickly. Breathing rapidly, she bent over and tried to control her breathing. She sucked in a deep breath and the room darkened. She barely felt the pain of hitting the floor.

They protected humanity for centuries. Now it’s their turn to need protection.

Excerpt
“I think someone collided full speed with their rocket pack against the ship. Chemical modules lit up like a bomb.”

“Hope it wasn’t one of ours.”

“Don’t think so. Wrong vehicle.”

This far out, there were no signs of battle, just intermittent sparkles, like distant fireflies on a summer night against a cloudless sky. The silence, the reflection of the comet in his rear visor, the glow of a full moon—none of the imagery foretold the ensuing loss of both enemy and friends two miles ahead, but he knew that was the inevitable conclusion. Friend or foe, the hounds of death would feed well today.

So surreal.

“Kind of weird out here. I know what’s coming yet everything is so beautiful.”

“That’s about to change,” Lex said. “Check out the fourth enemy craft.” A pink flash, then another, and a third, along the entire length of yellow structure.

“Wasn’t that one targeted by Delta pod?”

“Yes. Lucky bastards drew first blood.”

“Look. It’s collapsing. Son of a bitch, the Baker mines worked.”

A shock wave from the large explosion one mile away reached their location and smacked them front on, causing their combined mass to gyrate. “Cassie, tell your suit to cancel our spin.”

She did, and their flight path realigned toward the battlefield seconds away. He panned all indicator lights against his heads up display, but none were blinking red. “Computer?”

Yes.

“Check for system integrity across both suits.”

One hundred percent.

“Wow, I’m surprised that didn’t crack our forward shield.”

“Ditto.”

Their breathing accelerated, synchronized as the excitement of two blended into one and permeated their brains. “Damn Cassie, we better get there before the battle’s over.”

“Roger that.”

He calibrated the alignment of their flight path. “Use your maneuver jets to synchronize our trajectory.” A few burst of her attitude thrusters and their combined course aligned perfectly with the center cluster of the first enemy craft. “Cassie?”

“Yes.”

“My suit predicts we’re fifty seconds from contact. On impact, advance thirty yards up the structure, I’ll do the same in the opposite direction. That should make one hell of a hole in their hull. Once you attach the mines, remember to push off with your legs. A hundred yards out, fire up and get the hell out of there.”

“Understood, and you do the same.”

“I will. If you get to the shuttle first, initiate recovery operations for our squad or any other flyers.”

“Will do.”

He disconnected their tethered linkage and held her side with two hands. “Separation in three, two, one.” Lex gave a slight push. “Suit, rotate my position for landing.”

Roger.

He again formed his body into an X shape and his orientation flipped one hundred and eighty degrees. He closed his legs and straightened both boots.

Deceleration in five seconds.

The negative force vector traveled alone his spine. In response, he bent both knees.

Eighty feet per second, fifty, twenty, ten, contact in three, two, one.

The boot magnetics attached first, then he crouched and used those in his palms to ensure a four-point contact with the massive vehicle. Lex crawled along the alien frame until he arrived at the center cluster to the main structure. He attached one mine, slid ninety degrees around the axis and planted a second then stood upright and surveyed his black suited comrades as they darted to, from, and around the enemy space craft orbiting on the daylight side of the planet. Like hornets buzzing some evil creature that invaded their nest, the earthling’s drew blood again and again with pink flashes sparkling across the Bracan fleet.

Lex witnessed Cassie’s launch from the surface and prayed, “Please, protect her for me.” In an instant, she grew tiny and disappeared against the moon. He turned and plotted his next move—to plant his extra two mines on the hull of the nearest ship. “I can do this, I know I can.” He pivoted on his feet to break magnetic contact, then started at the second enemy craft using only his maneuver jet. In a few seconds he said, “Suit position for landing.”

Roger.

The onboard vapor thrusters fired and accomplished their purpose, only with an arrival harder than expected. “Ouch.” His approach speed had been too high and the attraction capacity of his boot magnets too low for his forward inertia. “Son of a bitch.”

Lex slid along the radial axis of the yellow structure heading for a collision with a three-foot beam extruded straight out of the surface. He clawed and scratched his hand and knee magnets trying to establish a hold. “Oh shit.” He closed both legs and ran smack into the bar. “Oh that hurt,” but his motion finally stopped. He shook his head, “Olson, you are one lucky bastard.”

The discovery of a submerged Model T blurs the line between dream and reality, exposing a young scuba diver's past and threatening her future.

Excerpt

Hauk left the cabin and stepped onto the twelve-foot deck. According to his watch, Arnie and Fisher had been down less than ten minutes.

The oxygen tanks lined up against the storage bin beckoned to him. He grabbed the closest one and peered at the gauge. 1,700 pounds. Enough air for a short dive. Wanting to witness what had prompted Fisher's request, he geared up and dove in.

The wetsuit didn't completely insulate his skin from the colder water he encountered fifty feet below. With darkness surrounding him, he trusted the guide rope to lead him to the site as he continued his descent. Minutes later, through the shadowy waters, Hauk spotted his two divers. Arnie floated above a lamppost, and Fisher knelt on the lakebed in front of the wreck.

An object was in Fisher's hand. He swam toward her to get a better view, but the mysterious object disappeared into her bag, and she glided away from him before he had a chance to satisfy his curiosity. A few flutter kicks behind her, Hauk stretched out his arm with the intent of tapping her shoulder. Her hand swiftly swept across her belt, and a glint of light from the lampposts reflected off her glove.

She spun around. Eyes glazed with fear, she swung her arm. Sharp reflexes allowed Hauk to deflect the blow, but they didn't prevent her other hand from sneaking past his defenses. He inhaled sharply.

A silver blade, shining in the light, pushed against his hose, ready to sever his air supply with the flick of her wrist.

Savvy Saturday: The Muse's Revenge Part I

Hey, girl! It’s me, your muse.

Do I have a bone, or two, to pick with you! I give you all those great ideas and what do you do with them? You twist them, crush them, mutilate them, and then you blame poor little me for giving you the silent treatment. Well, since you won’t listen to me, I decided to register you for a special writing workshop.

Don’t bother to argue! I’ve already paid for it, so like it or not, you will attend. The workshop will add splinters at the edge of your seat and venomous crawlers at the back of your neck. You’ll experience terror and fear in ways you never imagined.

The workshop takes place at Ghostly Shadows Resort where small rustic cabins border an ancient cemetery. One of them awaits your immediate arrival.

You can bring a friend at no cost, but make certain your guest has a strong heart. And don’t forget to sign the liability waiver attached to this letter.

Transportation by coach will be provided from the train station.

I promise you the insights you’ll gain from the workshop will leave you breathless.

See you soon,

Your muse ☠

~*~

The three authors had received the same letter, and arrived at the train station within minutes of each other. The only person nearby was a hooded coachman seated on the outside bench holding the reins. The coach’s door swung open, beckoning them to approach with their luggage.

When they’d read ‘transportation by coach’, they’d imagined some sort of bus or shuttle. None of them expected to climb into a black carriage pulled by four ebony horses.

The authors exchanged glances then entered the coach to settle on the red leather benches with their luggage at their feet.

The coach jerked forward along the bumpy road. They entered a forest where shadows sneaked in the twilight.

“You know girls, I’m starting to think I should have visited my granddaughter instead of attending this gripping workshop.” J. S. Marlo, a brunette with purple highlights matching her glasses and a melodious French accent, looked out the window at the darkening night. “I write romantic suspense that already keeps my readers up all night. I don’t want them to pee in their pajamas. By the way, I’m Marlo.”

“Hi, Marlo, I‘m Rita—Rita Bay. I get your point. This is the damndest invitation I’ve ever received. Glad I came alone.” The middle-aged passenger with an athletic build and a light Southern accent ran a hand through her short dark hair and perused the darkened interior of the coach. “An invitation from my muse? I don’t even have a muse. My paranormal shapeshifter and erotic mythological romances are my creations—out of my own head.

“I think this is some sort of sick joke. Bet my Champagne publisher Ellen or my editor Nikki is behind this. The culprit will get a piece of my mind when I get home.” She glanced out the window again. “If I get home.” She turned to the other passengers in the coach. “What about you?”

Without warning, a lantern flickered on inside the carriage. A brunette who looked to be about fourteen years old—but was almost thirty-five—jerked and grabbed the hand of the older passenger beside her.

"I'm Rachel," the mature, sable-haired woman said. "Jumpy-magoo here is Jenna Greene. She's the author. Obviously, she doesn't write anything spooky. Strictly young adult fantasy leaking out of her brain.

The coach came to an abrupt halt. Yelps rose into the chilly air as the luggage tumbled on the passengers' feet.

The door opened. Jenna took the first tentative step down, then another. She landed on a gravel path. The tiny rocks crunched under her weight as she advanced toward a large cabin. The other passengers scrunched behind her. A horse neighed from behind, startling them. When they turned around, the coach had disappeared into the darkness.

Underneath an oil lantern nailed to the wall, a sign squeaked on rusty chains. Bones of different shapes and sizes formed the words Welcome to Ghostly Shadows Resort.

Though none of the women felt particularly welcome, they had nowhere else to go, so they entered.

A vaporous creature with translucent skin and piercing violet eyes gazed at them from behind a counter.

“You must be the authors. I’m Banshee, the matron muse in charge of the workshop.”

A thick ledger rested on the top of the counter along with three skeleton keys. One in bronze, one tarnished silver, and the last in gold.

“Name, please?”

The young grandmother approached with her backpack. She was tired and she wanted to sleep. “I’m Marlo.”

The muse flipped through the pages of the ledger.

“J. S. Marlo. Canadian author. Your muse ordered dark chocolate and an extra pillow. It should be in your room.” She presented Marlo with the bronze key. “Cabin twenty-nine. Next?”

The small black wheeled suitcase thudded to the floor in front of the counter. “I’m Rita, Rita Bay, and I don’t have a muse. What I want is a lift back to the station. A cab. An Uber ride. Whatever.”

Banshee frowned. “That’s impossible.”

“We’ll see about that.” Rita pulled out her phone, then glared at their hostess who wore a smug smile. “No bars.”

Banshee snorted. “And no Wi-Fi, cabbies, or Uber drivers.” The silver key dangled from her skeletal fingers. “Cabin five. Your muse ordered a tray with your favorite snacks and a very special wine.”

“Whatever.” Rita, dressed head-to-toe in black, snatched the key from Banshee’s icy hands, picked up her suitcase, and stalked toward the exit muttering curses about publishers and editors messing in her business.

Jenna and Rachel shuffled forward.

"Cabin eleven. Twin beds provided. Your muse ordered three different types of potato chips and a pot of Earl Grey tea."

Receiving the gold key, Jenna remarked, "Ooh! Shiny."

Tugging her friend's elbow, Rachel grunted, "Focus," and led her out of the room.

After distributing the last key, Banshee picked up the ledger, hugged it to her chest, and floated through the back door behind the counter without providing them with any directions.

Since the inside walls and the counter failed to display any maps, the women exited into the night in search of their cabins.

Who will discover their cabin first? Will they survive? Find out on next week with Part II of The Muse's Revenge

Tattle and Wrye column October 2016 edition

FROM THE DESK OF
DONA PENZA TATTLE, ESQ.
AND
ASSOCIATE WRYE BALDERDASH

Greetings,

“Awwwtumn is the cutest season, y’know.”  Tattle appears with a necklace of fall leaves.

“Huh?”

“The vibrant colors, the cool breezes, the holidays a-coming…”

“Annnd, a new Love of Literature Leap reviews!”

“Let’s go!”

The duet land in IMAGINE by Jenna Greene, a Young Adult Fantasy, read and share.

Tattle oohs and ahhs as she finishes the story. “The moment Becky Thatcher opted to read under her covers after being ordered to sleep, I was hooked. The character was relatable to those of us who have done the exact same thing.  From there, I was also instantly drawn into the story. Action! Adventure! Magic! It was as if Jenna Greene snapped a whip and the plot obeyed to immediately stuff the ravenous reader. Meanwhile, Kat Bowers finds herself in another realm, confused and awed.”

“Then ta-da.” Wrye does a two step for emphasis. “Once Becky finds herself in the same realm, the two girls meet. Kat easily accepts the role of protector over the younger Becky. Soon after, they encounter Enalie, the magical entity, known as one of the Naturals.   She was responsible for their predicament. They not only discover they are on Oren, not Earth, they also are awed to realize that magic truly is real. The two of them, along with two others, had been chosen to save Oren.”

“With the Naturals magical age coming to an end, Becky and Kat become part of the new revolution of magic, and are called…” Tattle pauses, eyes wide before blurting, “The Elementals! Kat is water while Leda is air, and Jamee is earth. Becky is The Unifier. To save Oren, they must complete various tasks, but first Kat and Becky must find Jamee and Leda, which Becky thinks is an impossible pursuit once Kat is hurt.”

“Soon they find help from Ino, a soldier and good leader for the quest as well as Eston, nephew to the King. Still, their task is not easy. They must battle nightly beasts, and persuade the new holders of magic to assist them in retrieving the Orb of Olec. Will they? Or will darkness finally consume Oren?” Wrye’s tone becomes deep and threatening.

“Jenna’s work, though laced with enough darkness to pinch out the last star, still sparkles with fantasy and the yearning to be part of the mystical realm.” Tattle smiles whimsically as she remembers the perfectly alluring prose.  “I found myself wanting to trail along on their quest and be a part of the entourage that will save Oren. The story is polished and well-put together, and will totally appeal to not just YA but those of us who are quite a few decades older.”

“I’ve re-discovered my yearning for the fantasy of my youth within Becky. She is such an identifiable character and totally believable. Meanwhile, there are layers to Kat that are unexpected, making her extremely likable and establishing a heroine you constantly cheer onward. I like Jenna’s quick pacing, the way she never lets up and never allows her characters give up. Also, the darkness is chillingly sinister and stunningly evil. This is a darkly delightful book that you cannot put down. Kudos to Jenna Greene in providing the reading with such a wonderful adventure.”

Tattle and Wrye loop arms as they jump into another review, UNBALANCED by Courtney Shepard, a paranormal romance.

Tattle clears her throat and begins, “Long, long ago four young girls were abducted by the Master, and henceforth generations of four sisters are pulled back to the current Master of The Order.  The sisters’ powers grow with every generation; thereby The Order’s need for that power intensifies.  They cannot exist without it, and they have a decisive and heinous end plan.”

“This latest generation of sisters had been separated at birth yet they are all still hunted.” Narrowing his eyes, Wrye offers a sinister snarl.  “And they feel it, believe there is something more to their existence and soon those reasons unfold even as the threat of death dodges them.  This is a tale of four powerful women who have the ability to command the element of nature.  Asha, the main heroine of this story, is fire and is as independent and tough as they come as well as quite explosive when her temper is ignited.” Uses both hands to imitate the universal symbol of something exploding.

“Her love interest, Clay,” Tattle sighs the name, “… has his own mysterious depths and from the first you feel he might pose a threat. Still, he has been drawn to her, believes her to be the powerful woman who has haunted his dreams, La Guerrero Reina, the Warrior Queen. He pledges himself to her, but there is something more to this hot-to-the-bone hero, and their romance has the curve twisting velocity of a roller coaster ride as their passion increases and their love strengthens despite an unwavering sense, woven into the underside of the story that smacks of betrayal.”

“The backdrop of the story also shows the persistent struggle of women through the ages in life and in religion. The prevalent magic underpinning the story, along with the slow unveiling of the truth behind The Order, and the reason for the sisters’ power is fully compelling.  Good and evil has its place as well, but neither is pure which makes it all more human and realistic.”

Tattle adds, “The characters are all well-drawn with the sisters being very tough, no-nonsense and determined. The men they are drawn to, with a future promise of possibilities, also exhibit that fighting spirit, and they too share a mysterious aura that keeps the reader wondering at the truth. The sexuality of the book has steam and heat enough to pull you into the romance, yet is delightfully devoid of any crudeness or obscenity, making the various elements of mystery, romance, fantasy, magic and danger all balanced.”

“Courtney Shepard wove a tale that stays with you days past reading it.” Wrye gives his serious and penetrating look.  “The plot was swiftly paced, cleverly written while the dialogue was brisk, addictive and true to life. If there is any complaint it is that it ended too soon.  I want to read more of this universe, uncover the finer depths of The Order, the deeper mystery behind the sisters. These feelings, I believe the author, skillfully and deliberately provoked with the purpose of sequels, one for each of the sisters, Ivy, Mere and Avia, of which I am looking forward to reading. UNBALANCED is a book with a hook! If you enjoy the paranormal with strong female leads, this is certainly the story for you.”

Hope you all enjoyed our reviews! Until next month, keep reading.
